Deep within the enchanting rolling fields, resided a shepherd boy. His life was untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was mainly to care for his flock of sheep.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the breezes through the lone tree on the hilltop were his only companions. Day upon day, guarding his wards inculcated in him a website sense of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for company. On one such day from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plot.
Tales of wolves preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to help but found no beast.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This game persisted for a few days more. Yet, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the herd. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
